What makes time lapse photography so special?
Time lapse photography offers a unique perspective on a location, encouraging your audience to view the world in a different way. It’s an ideal way to capture a natural location, event public building or building project.
A time lapse film is not simply a real-time video played back at a high rate of speed; much more than that, it is actually a captivating facet of photography. In most instances it is not the case that a video camera is left running for hours and the resulting recording played back more rapidly – instead, typically, a stills camera is set to take photos at regular intervals that are then edited together and, in a fraction of the time they took to record, are played through.
The material is so alluring to, and draws the attention of the observer because it can, for one thing, enable the visualization of natural world rhythms and movements that the human eye cannot perceive in actual time due to the eye’s inability to detect changes in this format.
What can time lapse photography be used for?
There are many examples that can be suitable for time lapse photography: the rising and setting of the sun, the procession of stars through the night sky, the ebb and flow of waves and tides of the ocean, the formation, growth and dissolution of cloud formations and all manner of subtle changes in the sky that take place over a longer timescale. Just think how much more moving and compelling a time lapse sequence of a sunset is for the viewer, one in which he or she can see the sun disappear below the horizon and, with a final flash, heralds the dusk – compared to a regular photograph of a sunset.
Key to any choice of subject and location is the evaluation of a scene which is something akin to gazing into a crystal ball:
“How will this detail chosen appear in 30 minutes, in one hour, and in two hours? What will change and what will remain constant.”
All the above considerations apply equally to land-based and aerial time lapse photography. The latter, however, presents new and exciting possibilities. A viewpoint that is impractical to reach from the ground or impossible.
Additionally, aerial time lapse photography minimizes or completely eliminates any changes in behavior of live subjects (animals and humans) when the camera is way up in the sky. Out of sight and out of mind could be said to be a very big advantage.
The latest developments in professional camera drones, camera stabilization systems and their ability to “hang out” in the same part of the sky time and again has been very greatly enhanced with innovations in semi-autonomous flight and pre-flight programmable computer programs. This has further extended the possibilities of aerial time lapse photography.
